If your goal is to write, you should focus on writing and publishing your ideas. Avoid adjacent things that aren’t writing.

For example, it’s really easy for me to get lost in other stuff:

  • Building a static site generator

  • Styling web pages

  • Setting up domains and hosting

  • etc.

None of these are writing.

It’s better for me to let someone else handle them, and use something like Substack, Medium, or even Twitter or LinkedIn.

Your goals may be different, though. If you goalis to have fun with the technology, that’s great! Have fun and enjoy.

But think about what your goals are, what activities are in line with them, and which ones are procrastination.

One downside to these is that migrating between platforms can be painful. It’s a tradeoff for sure, but one I think is fine. Maybe it’s even not so bad if you end up having to start from scratch when changing platforms. Perhaps the best part of a blog is generating new content?
